Public Policy Expert, Jorge Fanjul, Joins Latinos for Education as Executive Director of Massachusetts Region

Fanjul will strengthen Latinos for Education’s policy and programmatic work in Massachusetts, including its effort to increase the diversity of Massachusetts’ educator workforce and support Latino students receive equitable educational opportunities

Boston, Massachusets – Latinos for Education announced today the hiring of Jorge Fanjul as Executive Director of its Massachusetts region, joining a team of professionals dedicated to increasing the leadership and representation of Latinos within the education sector. Founded in 2016, Latinos for Education has been increasing the representation of Latinos within the education sector through its leadership pipeline programs in Massachusetts, Greater Houston and the Bay Area; and advancing Latino-informed policies that improve Latino student outcomes at the local, state and federal level.

Fanjul will oversee Latinos for Education’s continued work and impact in Massachusetts, including expansion of its leadership programs, advancement of its policy and advocacy work, partnership building for long-term sustainability, and growing the organization’s network of alumni and partners across the Commonwealth.

“I’ve spent my career working to build trust between government and marginalized communities so that the public sector can better serve communities of color, and I’m excited to take that experience to reimagine how our education system can better serve Latino students, teachers and families,” said Fanjul. “As someone who was raised by a single mother who immigrated as a refugee from Cuba and was fortunate to have Latino educators and mentors in my life, I know firsthand the power that an education can have on Latino students when they are surrounded by educators who share in their culture and affirm their identity. My charge is to ensure more students get to experience this in their educational journey.”

Fanjul began his career working within New York City government, first in the Office of the Comptroller serving as a Deputy Director of Public Affairs where he oversaw community and civic engagement efforts, and eventually within Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Democracy NYC team where he oversaw civic engagement and Census efforts as Senior Advisor to the mayor. Fanjul broadened his policy work to the federal level, working with UnidosUS to examine Latino civic participation patterns, and most recently served as the North American Program Director for  The Centre for Public Impact where he led efforts to solidify the Centre’s Government Legitimacy and Equity work.

“Jorge embodies our core values at Latinos for Education and we’re thrilled to have him lead our Massachusettts region,” said Amanda Fernandez, Founder and CEO of Latinos for Education. “He leads from his identity leveraging his experiences as a Latino to inform his work and advocate for Latino students, and he works con ganas – working tirelessly to ensure Latino students have access to equitable opportunities in education.”
