Boston, MA – Yesterday, eight people, including members of the Asian-American community, were killed and one other was wounded in a series of shootings at Asian-owned businesses in the Atlanta area.  Latinos for Education issued the following statement on the events:

“We offer our deepest condolences to the victims and those affected by the tragic act of violence in Georgia. While details are still unfolding, these shootings have come during a time of increasing attacks on the AAPI community, and heightened fear among AAPI communities across the country. At Latinos for Education, we have always considered it our obligation to confront racism in all its forms, and we offer our support and solidarity with the Asian American community during this extremely difficult time. Hate has no place in our society. Our schools are the place where we can educate the next generation to be better than us – to create a society where violence such as what happened in Atlanta yesterday is no longer commonplace.  Therefore, it is incumbent on educators throughout our nation – regardless of race – to speak out against hate wherever they see it, and to teach our children that there is a better path forward. As the rise of Anti-Asian violence continues, we encourage all educators to check on their AAPI students and be a support network for them.
