Emily Soto, Program Manager at The Teacher Collaborative

Emily Soto is the 5th grade and 6th grade English Language Education (ESL) Teacher at the Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter School. As a first-generation student and daughter of Dominican immigrants, education, hard work, and cultural pride have been the most important values her parents taught her. Growing up in Boston, Emily’s experiences exposed her to countless disparities in her community which encouraged her to become an advocate at a young age. Emily earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Women & Gender Studies from the University of Massachusetts Boston. While she equipped herself to go to law school and work in the juvenile justice field, she discovered that many of the social issues she was passionate about were rooted in the injustices in education. She discovered that if she wanted to be impactful in the lives of black and brown children, that meant being an advocate directly in the classroom and disrupting the school to prison pipeline at the forefront instead of in the courtroom. In 2017, Emily joined Teach for America and in 2019, she earned a Master’s in Education in Teaching & Curriculum from Boston University Wheelock School of Education. Emily also participated in the InSPIRED Fellowship Program. Her purpose as an educator is to create learning environments where her students are loved, feel proud of their culture, and believe in themselves as learners and multilingual members of their communities.
